The short version

CSI Accounting & Payroll is one of the longest-running accounting firms in the Twin Cities, operating since 1966 out of St. Louis Park. They offer monthly bookkeeping, accounting, tax and payroll on a bundled model, and they are, by a wide margin, the most visible accounting firm in Minnesota search results.

Where we differ: CSI is a generalist built for volume across many industries. HAR is built for depth in a small number of them.

In depth

What actually separates us

The difference between a package and a practice

CSI sells packages. That is not a criticism, it is their stated model, and for a straightforward business with predictable needs it works. You choose a tier, you receive a defined set of deliverables, and the relationship runs on that structure.

HAR does not work that way. When a client comes to us with books eleven months behind, three entities, a payroll running across four sites and a DHS reevaluation due in six weeks, there is no package for that. There is a conversation, a scope, and a named person who owns the outcome. Our average client stays roughly five years, which is not what happens when a relationship is transactional.

Specialisation is the whole argument

CSI serves a broad set of industries. Their published verticals include retail, transportation, auto repair and restaurants. Breadth of that kind is a real commercial strength, and it is why they rank for so much.

But breadth has a cost, and the cost lands on you if your business sits inside a regulated category. A 245D-licensed provider does not need a bookkeeper who understands retail inventory. They need someone who has reconciled payroll records against a DWRS rate worksheet, who knows what DHS asks for during a licensing review, and who has written a corrective action plan before. That is not a service you can package. It is knowledge that either exists in the room or does not.

We built HAR around a small number of industries so that the knowledge is already there when you call.

What happens when something goes wrong

In 2024 our payroll processor announced it was shutting down. Two hundred and forty of our payroll clients were suddenly at risk of missing payroll, with all the penalty exposure and staff fallout that implies.

We migrated every one of them to a new processor. Account setup, full data transfer, compliance verification, client by client, inside a hard deadline. Zero missed payrolls. Zero compliance gaps.

We raise this because the most common fear business owners have about switching firms is that something will break in the handoff. We have already run the hardest version of that transition, at scale, under pressure, and nobody missed a paycheck. Your transition is a much smaller problem than the one we already solved.

Where your work is actually done

Most of our team works from our Minneapolis office on Park Ave S. You can walk in. You can sit down with the person who reconciles your accounts and point at a line on a screen.

This sounds old-fashioned until the week you need it. When a lender wants financials by Friday, when the IRS sends a notice, when you are trying to decide whether you can afford two more staff, a scheduled call slot is not the same as being able to reach someone who already knows your business.

Services that only matter until you need them

We have secured more than one million dollars in grants and loans for clients. We handle entity formation, EIN and Minnesota state tax ID setup, and Secretary of State filings. We coordinate DHS licensing.

None of that matters to most businesses most of the time. Then a grant window opens with an eleven-day deadline, or a client decides to convert from a sole proprietorship to an S-Corp, or a second location needs its own entity. At that moment the question is whether your accounting firm can do it or whether you are starting a vendor search. With us, it is already in the building.

240

Payroll clients migrated. Zero missed payrolls.

When our payroll processor announced it was shutting down, every one of our 240 payroll clients was at risk at once. We rebuilt every account on a new platform, transferred the data and verified compliance client by client, on a hard deadline. Nobody missed a paycheck. Nobody had a compliance gap. If you are worried about what happens to your books during a transition, that is the standard we hold ourselves to.

Being straight with you

Where CSI may be the better choice

CSI has built a genuinely impressive content operation. Their learning center ranks nationally for hundreds of payroll and accounting questions, and if you are simply looking for free educational material on payroll mechanics, they are an excellent resource. They have also been in business since 1966, which is a longer track record than ours.

We would rather tell you this now than have you find out three months in. If that describes your situation, they are worth a conversation. If it does not, we would like the chance to earn the work.

The problems people bring us

Why business owners call in the first place

After twenty years the patterns are consistent. Almost every client who moves to us arrives with some combination of the following.

An accountant who takes days to answer a simple question

Not a complicated question. A simple one. And the answer arrives Thursday, after the decision has already been made without it.

Books they do not trust

The statements balance, but the owner could not defend a single line to a lender or an auditor, and quietly suspects some of it is wrong.

Months or years of backlog

Nothing reconciled since spring. Sometimes since the year before. We currently do catch-up bookkeeping free as part of onboarding, because arguing about how it happened helps nobody.

Tax bills that arrive as surprises

No planning, no warning, no advance conversation. Deductions missed because nobody was looking for them during the year, only after it ended.

Reports that explain nothing

Templated output that reports what happened without telling you what it means or what to do about it.

A firm that did not understand their industry

This is the most expensive one. A bookkeeper who has never seen a DWRS rate worksheet, does not know what 245D requires, and finds out during your audit.

Constant turnover at the firm

Re-explaining your business to a new person every eighteen months, forever. Most of our team works from our Minneapolis office, and clients keep the same point of contact.

In their words

What clients say after several years

Their team handles payroll, IRS matters and state payments with accuracy and professionalism. When issues come up they move fast and provide clear solutions. This support saved me time and prevented costly mistakes in my business.

Client of eight years

Their bookkeeping and tax filing are flawless, but their CFO reports are the real game-changer for my business strategy. If you want a team that is knowledgeable, clear and professional, look no further.

Client since company founding

They take the time to explain everything clearly and ensure that all financial matters are handled accurately and on time. They are organised, trustworthy, and truly care about helping businesses stay compliant and financially healthy.

Questions

HAR Financial Services vs CSI Accounting & Payroll

Is CSI Accounting bigger than HAR Financial Services?

Yes. CSI has been operating since 1966 and serves a broader range of industries with a larger marketing footprint. We are a 12-person firm serving roughly 600 clients. The relevant question is not which firm is larger but which firm has the specific expertise your business needs and the capacity to give you direct access.

Do you offer packaged monthly pricing like CSI?

We price to scope rather than to tier. Payroll typically runs around $200 per month, bookkeeping around $500, and clients who bundle both average around $700. Tax filing is separate. We tell you the number after the first consultation, and there is no charge until then.

What if my business is not in a regulated industry?

We serve businesses across many sectors, and about half our book is general small business bookkeeping and payroll. The regulatory depth is an advantage if you need it and simply irrelevant if you do not.

How disruptive is switching from CSI to HAR?

We handle the data transfer, reconcile the opening balances and verify compliance before anything changes hands. We migrated 240 payroll clients to an entirely new processor without a single missed payroll, so a single-client transition is well within routine.
